Natural Habitat
Indoors, commonly found in homes, museums, and warehouses. They prefer dark, undisturbed areas.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dried animal products (e.g., dead insects, pet food, taxidermy). Adults feed on pollen and nectar outdoors but do not feed on household items.
Behavior Patterns
The larval stage is the destructive one, causing damage to textiles. Larvae are slow-moving and tend to avoid light. Adults are attracted to light and often found near windows. They undergo complete metamorphosis.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause significant damage to household items made of animal products, including carpets, clothing, upholstery, and stored foods. They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. Benefits: In nature, they are detritivores, helping to break down dead organic matter.
