Larvae eat keratin-rich materials such as wool, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects; adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar.

Larvae are slow-moving, often hide in dark undisturbed areas, and shed bristly skins. Adults are small, oval, and may fly toward windows or lights.

Larvae can damage clothing, carpets, and taxidermy, and their shed hairs may irritate skin or airways. They are harmless biters and contribute outdoors to decomposition and pollination.
