Natural Habitat
Hair follicles and sebaceous glands of mammals, including humans.
Diet & Feeding
Skin cells, sebum (skin oil), and occasionally bacteria associated with hair follicles.
Behavior Patterns
They live mainly in hair follicles and pores. They are nocturnal and emerge to mate on the skin's surface at night. They have a short life cycle of a couple of weeks.
Risks & Benefits
Usually harmless commensals. High populations can cause demodicosis or rosacea-like symptoms, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. They may provide minor benefits by consuming dead skin cells and excess oil.
