Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Coleoptera (Beetles), Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: Typically 1.7 to 3.5 mm in length.

Natural Habitat
Found worldwide, commonly indoors within homes (carpets, closets, attics) and outdoors on flowers. Indoors, they seek dark, secluded areas where natural fibers are stored.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural animal fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dead insects. Adults primarily feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and are often found near windows. The larvae are photophobic (avoid light) and cause the actual damage by feeding on textiles. They have a complete metamorphosis life cycle.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Larvae are a significant household pest that can destroy clothing, carpets, and museum specimens. Some people may experience allergic skin reactions ('carpet beetle dermatitis') from contact with larval hairs. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of dried animal matter.
