Natural Habitat
Near wetlands, ponds, slow-moving streams, and lakes throughout North America.
Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous; adults hunt small flying insects like mosquitoes, flies, and gnats. Larvae (nymphs) eat aquatic invertebrates and occasionally small tadpoles or fish.
Behavior Patterns
Males are highly territorial and frequently patrol the edges of water bodies. They are strong fliers with a distinctive spotted wing pattern. Mating occurs near water, and eggs are laid directly into the water or mud.
