Bed bug (likely nymph or adult fragment)
Cimex lectularius
- Order & Family
- Hemiptera; Cimicidae
- Size
- Adults are 4–7 mm long; nymphs range from about 1–4 mm. The pictured insect is too blurred for reliable sizing or confirmation.
Natural Habitat
Mattresses, bed frames, upholstery, cracks, and other sheltered areas near sleeping hosts.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds mainly on blood, usually from humans, using piercing-sucking mouthparts. It typically feeds at night and retreats afterward.
Behavior Patterns
Wingless, flattened insects that hide in crevices and may spread through luggage, clothing, furniture, or adjacent rooms. Females lay small eggs in protected cracks; several molts occur before adulthood.
Risks & Benefits
Bites can cause itchy welts, allergic reactions, and sleep disruption, but bed bugs are not established vectors of disease. They provide little meaningful ecological benefit indoors.
