Natural Habitat
Pantropical and ubiquitous in human structures; commonly found in kitchens, pantries, and warehouses where dried foods are stored.
Diet & Feeding
Polyphagous scavengers; they consume a vast range of dried organic materials including spices, flour, cereal, dry pet food, books, leather, and even some prescription drugs.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are active fliers and are attracted to light. They have a lifecycle involving complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult), with larvae doing most of the damage by tunneling through food sources.
Risks & Benefits
They are significant household and commercial pests that cause economic loss through food contamination. They do not bite or sting humans and do not spread disease, but infested food should be discarded.
