Rove Beetle (causing Paederus Dermatitis)
Paederus spp.
- Order & Family
- Order: Coleoptera; Family: Staphylinidae
- Size
- 7–10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found worldwide, mainly in moist habitats like crop fields, riverbanks, and grassy areas. They are attracted to artificial light and often enter homes at night.
Diet & Feeding
Predatory; they feed on other small insects, insect eggs, and sometimes plant matter. They often prey on agricultural pests.
Behavior Patterns
Unlike most beetles, they do not bite or sting. Instead, when crushed or brushed against the skin, they release a potent toxin (pederin) stored in their hemolymph. They are active fliers, especially at night near lights.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Causing 'whiplash dermatitis' or linear dermatitis (as seen in the image), characterized by a blistering rash, burning sensation, and discoloration that appears 24-48 hours after contact. Benefits: They are beneficial biological control agents in agriculture as they consume crop pests.
