Diet & Feeding
Larvae (maggots) are primary parasites that feed exclusively on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals and humans; adults feed on flower nectar and rotting matter.
Behavior Patterns
Female flies lay eggs at the edges of open wounds or mucous membranes. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the flesh, feeding and growing for 5-7 days before dropping to the ground to pupate.
Risks & Benefits
Extremely dangerous parasite causing myiasis, which can lead to severe tissue destruction, secondary infections, and death if left untreated. It has no ecological benefits to humans and is a major pest for livestock industries.
