Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding

Predatory; they primarily consume aphids, but also eat mites, scale insects, and insect eggs. Often called "aphid lions."

Behavior Patterns

Larvae of some species (junk bugs) pile dead prey and plant debris onto their backs via hooked bristles (scolophores) to camouflage themselves from predators and sneak up on prey.

Risks & Benefits

Highly beneficial to the ecosystem and gardeners as natural pest control. They are harmless to humans, though they may occasionally deliver a minor, non-toxic nip if handled.
