Larvae consume wool, fur, feathers, silk, dead insects, and other keratin-rich debris. Adults mainly feed on pollen and nectar.

Larvae are slow-moving, bristly, and often hide in dark undisturbed places; the pictured object may be a shed skin or curled larva. Adults are attracted to light and may enter homes from outdoors.

Larvae can damage textiles and sometimes cause skin irritation from their hairs. They help decompose animal-derived organic material, while adults can pollinate flowers.
