Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding

Roots and stems of grasses, crops, and other vegetation; some species also consume decaying organic matter.

Behavior Patterns

They live underground during the day and may emerge on the surface during damp nights or after heavy rain. They undergo complete metamorphosis, eventually emerging as adult crane flies.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits include aerating soil and providing a food source for birds and mammals; however, high populations are considered pests because they can cause significant brown patches and damage to lawns and agricultural crops.
