Portuguese Man o' War
Scientific Name: Physalia physalis
Order & Family: Order Siphonophorae; Family Physaliidae
Size: Float (pneumatophore) up to 30 cm long; tentacles can reach an average of 10 meters, but sometimes up to 30 meters.

Natural Habitat
Open tropical and subtropical oceans, commonly found floating on the water surface and sometimes washed up on beaches.
Diet & Feeding
Strictly carnivorous; feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and plankton by paralyzing them with venomous thread-like stinging cells (nematocysts).
Behavior Patterns
It is not a single organism but a colonial organism made of specialized polyps. It uses a gas-filled float to sail with the wind and currents and lacks independent propulsion.
Risks & Benefits
Risk: Highly venomous; stings cause intense pain, welts, and in rare cases, respiratory distress or allergic reactions, even when dead on the beach. Benefit: Provides a habitat and food source for specific specialized predators like the sea swallow (Glaucus atlanticus).
