Carpet Beetle (specifically the Varied Carpet Beetle)
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Coleoptera (Beetles) / Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: 2mm to 4mm (approx. 1/8 to 3/16 inch)

Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors on carpets, wool clothing, furs, and stored fabrics. Outdoors, larvae live in bird nests or feed on dead animal matter, while adults frequent flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers (wool, silk, fur), dead insects, pet hair, and feathers. Adults feed primarily on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas (under furniture, in closets). They move slowly and often roll into a ball when disturbed. Adults are attracted to light and often found near windowsills trying to get outside.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Larvae can cause significant damage to carpets, clothing, and upholstery made of natural fibers. Some people may have allergic reactions to the larval hairs (carpet beetle dermatitis). Benefits: They act as decomposers in nature, cleaning up dead organic matter.
