Natural Habitat
Found exclusively on the skin and feathers of host birds, particularly poultry like chickens and turkeys.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on host feathers and skin debris; some species, like the Chicken Body Louse, also scratch the skin to feed on blood and fluids.
Behavior Patterns
They are permanent ectoparasites and cannot survive long off the host. They exhibit rapid movement through feathers and attach their eggs (nits) in clusters to the base of feathers.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Causes irritation, feather loss, and decreased egg production in poultry. In heavy infestations, they can lead to anemia and death of the host bird. They generally do not infest humans but can cause temporary irritation if handled.
