Drain Fly Larva
Psychodidae (family)
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- Typically 3 to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found in moist environments rich in organic matter such as sink drains, sewers, septic tanks, and damp soil.
Diet & Feeding
Consumes nutrient-rich slime, algae, bacteria, and decomposing organic material (biofilm) within plumbing.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae live within the gelatinous film of drains; they have a small breathing tube to reach the surface. They pupate near the waterline before emerging as fuzzy, moth-like adults.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and do not bite. They represent a nuisance in homes and can potentially transport bacteria from drains to food surfaces, but they also help break down organic sludge in plumbing.
