Natural Habitat

Found on or under soil, leaf litter, stones, wood, and occasionally indoors at ground level. Many species prefer damp, sheltered habitats.

Diet & Feeding

Mostly predatory, eating caterpillars, beetle larvae, aphids, slugs, snails, and other small invertebrates; some also consume seeds or plant matter.

Behavior Patterns

Usually nocturnal and fast-running, hiding by day beneath debris. Adults commonly overwinter in soil or sheltered crevices; many species do not fly readily despite having wings.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to people, pets, buildings, and stored food, though some can release irritating defensive chemicals if handled. They are beneficial garden predators that help suppress many pest species.
