Phereoeca uterella
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera: Tineidae
- Size
- Case length typically 8mm to 12mm.
Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors on walls, in closets, or around baseboards, particularly in humid or tropical climates.
Diet & Feeding
The larva feeds on spider webs and natural fibers such as silk, wool, and human hair.
Behavior Patterns
The larva constructs a spindle-shaped protective case out of silk and debris (like sand or dust). It can turn inside its case to emerge from either end to feed or move. It undergoes complete metamorphosis, eventually becoming a small, brownish moth.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and pets, but can be a minor pest if they feed on woolen or silk clothing. They provide a benefit to the ecosystem by consuming spider webs.
