Varied Carpet Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found worldwide in homes, museums, and warehouses; outdoors they live in bird nests, bee hives, and on flowering plants.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dead insects; adults feed primarily on pollen and nectar.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are attracted to light and often found near windowsills. The larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas (like closets or under furniture) where they can feed on organic material. They undergo complete metamorphosis.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Larvae are destructive household pests known to damage carpets, clothing, and taxidermy. The fine hairs on larvae can cause allergic skin reactions (dermatitis) in some people. They do not bite or sting. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of dead organic matter.
