White-lined sphinx moth
Scientific Name: Hyles lineata
Order & Family: Order Lepidoptera, Family Sphingidae
Size: Wingspan typically ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 inches (6.4 to 9 cm).

Natural Habitat
Found across North and Central America in environments ranging from deserts to gardens, meadows, and agricultural fields.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on flower nectar from a wide variety of plants including columbine, larkspur, and evening primrose. Larvae (hornworms) eat foliage from plants like four o' clocks, grapes, and willow weeds.
Behavior Patterns
They are often called hummingbird moths because they hover while feeding and are active during dusk and dawn (crepuscular). They are known to undertake massive migrations in some years.
Risks & Benefits
They are important pollinators for many wildflowers. While the larvae are technically hornworms, they are generally not considered major garden pests compared to their tomato-loving relatives.
