Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera (Beetles), Family: Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)

Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in homes, particularly in carpets, closets, and around dried organic material. Outdoors, they are found in bird or insect nests and on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar from flowers. However, the larvae are pests that consume natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are often seen near windows or lights trying to get outdoors. Adults live for 2-6 weeks. The damaging larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas like under baseboards or inside stored clothing.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: The larvae are significant household pests that can damage clothing, carpets, and museum specimens. Their bristly hairs can cause allergic skin reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. Benefits: In nature, they help decompose dead organic matter.
