Natural Habitat

Found on various plants, flowers, and agricultural crops; common in gardens and orchards worldwide.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous and highly predatory. They primarily eat aphids, but also consume mealybugs, scales, spider mites, and small caterpillars.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae of certain species use hooked bristles on their backs to collect debris and the husks of their prey to create a 'trash' camouflage. This masks them from both predators and their own prey.

Risks & Benefits

Extremely beneficial to ecosystems and gardens as a natural pest control (often called 'aphid lions'). They pose no risk to humans, though they may occasionally give a small, harmless pinch if they end up on skin.
