Bird mite / Rodent mite
Scientific Name: Ornithonyssus spp. / Liponyssus spp.
Order & Family: Order Mesostigmata, Family Macronyssidae
Size: 0.5 mm to 1 mm (barely visible to the naked eye)

Natural Habitat
Bird nests, rodent burrows, or indoor environments where their hosts nest, such as eaves, attics, and voids.
Diet & Feeding
Blood of avian or rodent hosts; they may bite humans if the primary host is unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
Nymphs and adults are parasitic. They are most active when young birds leave the nest or when a rodent host dies, causing the mites to migrate in search of a new host.
Risks & Benefits
They can cause intense itching, dermatitis, and allergic reactions in humans. While they do not generally transmit diseases to humans or survive long on human blood, they are significant household pests.
