Natural Habitat

Typically found in moist environments, near water sources, grassy fields, and gardens.

Diet & Feeding

Adults mostly do not feed, though some consume nectar. Larvae (leatherjackets) feed on decaying plant matter or plant roots.

Behavior Patterns

Often mistake for giant mosquitoes, they are clumsy fliers and are frequently attracted to lights at night. They have a very short adult lifespan focused on mating.

Risks & Benefits

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. Larvae can be a minor pest to lawns, but they serve as an important food source for birds, fish, and other wildlife.
