Natural Habitat

Trees, shrubs, gardens, and woodland edges across much of North America, especially where caterpillars and beetles are abundant.

Diet & Feeding

A predatory true bug that pierces prey with its beak and sucks body fluids, feeding on caterpillars, beetles, moths, and other insects.

Behavior Patterns

Usually solitary and ambush-oriented; nymphs pass through several stages before adulthood. Adults develop a distinctive cogwheel-like thoracic crest and may fly when disturbed.

Risks & Benefits

Beneficial for biological control because it consumes many plant pests. It can deliver a painful defensive bite if handled, though it is not medically dangerous and does not normally attack people.
