Case-bearing clothes moth larva (likely)
Tinea pellionella
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera; Tineidae
- Size
- Larvae are about 6–10 mm long, excluding the case; adults have a wingspan of roughly 9–16 mm.
Natural Habitat
Dark, undisturbed indoor areas such as closets, carpets, upholstery, and stored textiles; larvae often carry a portable silk-and-fiber case.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae eat keratin-containing materials, including wool, fur, feathers, hair, and occasionally natural-fiber textiles. Adults do not feed on clothing.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae avoid light and crawl while concealed in their case, enlarging it as they grow. They pupate within or near the case; adults are small, weak-flying moths.
Risks & Benefits
They can damage wool, fur, carpets, and other animal-derived fabrics, but do not bite or transmit disease. They contribute modestly to decomposition of keratin-rich debris.
