Natural Habitat

Typically found on shade trees and ornamental shrubs such as oaks, elms, and citrus trees; primarily located in the southeastern United States and parts of Mexico.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on the leaves of various broadleaf trees and shrubs, including oak, elm, hackberry, maple, and sycamore.

Behavior Patterns

These caterpillars move slowly and are solitary feeders. They are known for their distinct 'hairy' appearance that resembles a tuft of fur or a Persian cat. They typically undergo metamorphosis in a cocoon that is often attached to twigs or bark.

Risks & Benefits

RISK: This is considered one of the most venomous caterpillars in North America. The 'fur' hides hollow spines that can deliver an excruciatingly painful sting, causing severe burning, swelling, nausea, and sometimes shock. Avoid touching at all costs.
