Meadows, grasslands, gardens, and woodland edges; adults commonly rest on vegetation, fences, and buildings.

Nymphs suck xylem sap while concealed in frothy spittle masses. Adults also feed on plant xylem and can use many herbaceous plants.

Adults are active jumpers and often fly or spring away when disturbed. Nymphs produce protective foam and undergo incomplete metamorphosis through several molts.

Usually harmless to people and animals, though heavy infestations can weaken ornamental or crop plants and may transmit plant pathogens. They are part of food webs and support predators such as spiders and birds.
