Horsehair Worm
Scientific Name: Gordius spp. (Phylum Nematomorpha)
Order & Family: Order Gordioidea, Family Gordiidae
Size: Typically 10 to 70 centimeters long, but extremely thin (1-3 millimeters in diameter)

Natural Habitat
Adults live in freshwater environments such as streams, puddles, troughs, and swimming pools. Juveniles are parasitic inside terrestrial arthropods.
Diet & Feeding
Adults do not feed; they rely on stored energy. Larvae are parasitic and absorb nutrients directly from their arthropod hosts (crickets, grasshoppers, beetles).
Behavior Patterns
They are famous for their parasitic lifecycle where larvae develop inside an insect host. When the worm is mature, it manipulates the host's brain, compelling it to jump into water, where the worm bursts out to reproduce.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans, pets, and plants. They are beneficial for pest control as they kill harmful insects like crickets, grasshoppers, and cockroaches.
