Sap Beetle / Picnic Beetle

Scientific Name: Glischrochilus quadrisignatus

Order & Family: Coleoptera, Nitidulidae

Size: 4 mm to 7 mm in length

Sap Beetle / Picnic Beetle

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in orchards, gardens, and agricultural fields near overripe or damaged fruit; often enters homes through open windows or doors.

Diet & Feeding

They feed primarily on fermenting plant juices, ripening fruit, fungi, and occasionally corn, particularly when there is damage from other pests.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are highly attracted to the smell of fermentation and decay. They are most active in late summer and are known to congregate in large numbers on damaged vegetation. They undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to adult.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered a nuisance pest in agriculture and for home gardeners as they can introduce fungi or rot to crops. They do not pose a direct physical risk to humans (they do not bite or sting) but can spoil outdoor fruit and picnic food.
