Rove beetle
Staphylinidae (likely an unidentified species)
- Order & Family
- Coleoptera; Staphylinidae
- Size
- Usually 1–35 mm long; the pictured individual appears approximately 10–15 mm.
Natural Habitat
Leaf litter, soil, decaying vegetation, compost, and damp areas; often encountered on outdoor surfaces while dispersing.
Diet & Feeding
Most are predatory, eating small insects, mites, larvae, and other soft-bodied invertebrates; some species consume decaying organic matter or fungi.
Behavior Patterns
Recognized by short wing covers that leave much of the abdomen exposed. They are active, fast-running beetles and may raise or curl the abdomen when disturbed.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to people and beneficial predators of pest insects and decomposer organisms. A few species, especially Paederus, can cause skin irritation if crushed against the skin, but the image does not establish that genus.
