Natural Habitat
Pantropical and globally distributed, commonly found in pantries, kitchens, and commercial warehouses where dried plant products are stored.
Diet & Feeding
Primary a scavenger of dried tobacco products, but also feeds on flour, cereal, dry pet food, spices, and dried fruit.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are capable of flight and are most active in low light or at dusk. They have a distinctive 'humped' appearance with their head tucked downward. The larvae are the primary stage responsible for food spoilage.
Risks & Benefits
A major economic pest of stored goods. While they do not bite or transmit diseases to humans, they can ruin entire stockpiles of food and tobacco products through contamination.
