Cellar Spider, Daddy Long-legs Spider

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in dark, damp, and undisturbed areas of human dwellings, such as cellars, basements, attics, sheds, and corners of rooms. They can also be found outdoors in sheltered locations.

Diet & Feeding

Insectivorous. Cellar spiders primarily feed on other insects and spiders. They are known to hunt and eat other spiders, including venomous ones like Black Widows and Brown Recluse spiders.

Behavior Patterns

They build messy, irregular webs in corners and under objects. When disturbed, they often vibrate rapidly in their web, making themselves appear blurry to predators. They are generally nocturnal.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks are minimal; their fangs are very small, and their venom is not considered medically significant to humans, typically causing only a mild, localized reaction if bitten (which is rare). Benefits include natural pest control, as they prey on various household insects and other spiders.
