Bradysia spp.
- Order & Family
- Diptera; Sciaridae
- Size
- Adults are typically 1.5–4 mm long.
Natural Habitat
Moist potting soil, organic-rich indoor soil, greenhouses, and damp areas around windows. Adults commonly rest near windows and light sources.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed mainly on fungi, algae, and decaying organic matter in soil; some may nibble plant roots. Adults feed little, consuming moisture or nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are weak fliers attracted to light and often emerge from houseplant soil. Their life cycle can be completed in roughly 3–4 weeks under warm, moist conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to people and pets; heavy larval infestations can damage seedlings and plant roots. Larvae also help decompose organic material and contribute to soil nutrient cycling.
