Predaceous Diving Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found in slow-moving or stagnant freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes, marshes, and stream edges.

Diet & Feeding

Strictly carnivorous; they eat aquatic insects, tadpoles, small fish, and snails. They are known as fierce predators in water ecosystems.

Behavior Patterns

They are active swimmers that use their hind legs as oars. They must periodically surface to collect a bubble of air under their wing covers (elytra) to breathe underwater. They are also capable of flying between water bodies.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits: They help control mosquito populations by eating larvae. Risks: Large species can deliver a sharp, painful bite to humans if handled carelessly, and they are generally considered 'water tigers' in the insect world.
