Community identification
Human head louse (likely)
Pediculus humanus capitis
- Order & Family
- Psocodea (formerly Phthiraptera), Pediculidae
- Size
- Adults are about 2–3 mm long; eggs (nits) are roughly 0.8 mm and firmly attached to hairs.
Natural Habitat
Lives on human scalp hair, especially near the nape and behind the ears; it does not normally survive long away from a host.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds by piercing the scalp and consuming small amounts of human blood several times daily.
Behavior Patterns
Wingless, crawling insects that cannot jump or fly; females glue eggs to hair shafts, and the life cycle from egg to adult takes about 3–4 weeks.
Risks & Benefits
Causes intense itching, irritation, and scratching-related sores but is not known to transmit significant disease in most settings. Control involves treating the scalp and removing nits with a fine comb; confirmatory identification is recommended because the image is indistinct.
