Dark, undisturbed indoor areas such as closets, carpets, upholstery, and stored textiles.

Larvae feed on keratin-containing materials, including wool, fur, feathers, hair, and lint; adults generally do not feed.

Larvae hide inside silken, fiber-covered cases and avoid light. They are most active in dark, humid, poorly disturbed locations and can produce several generations annually indoors.

They can damage clothing, carpets, and other animal-fiber materials but do not bite or transmit disease. They provide minor food value for predators and help decompose keratinous debris.
