Chrysoperla spp.

- Order Neuroptera, Family Chrysopidae
- Size
- 3 mm to 10 mm (0.1 to 0.4 inches)
Natural Habitat
Found on various plants, in gardens, orchards, and agricultural fields where prey is abundant.
Diet & Feeding
Voracious predator of soft-bodied insects like aphids, mealybugs, and mites. They use hollow mandibles to suck out the fluids of their prey.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae of some species practice camouflage by attaching the husks of their dead prey and other organic debris to their backs using hooked bristles, giving them a 'junk pile' appearance. They are active hunters and undergo complete metamorphosis into green lacewings.
Risks & Benefits
Highly beneficial to the ecosystem and gardeners as they provide effective biological pest control. They are generally harmless to humans, though they may occasionally nip skin if handled, causing minor, temporary irritation.
