Natural Habitat
Open areas, gardens, under paving stones, and near human structures; common throughout Europe and parts of North America.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous; feeds on nectar, seeds, small insects, and famously 'farms' aphids for their honeydew.
Behavior Patterns
Highly social insects living in large underground colonies with a single queen. They exhibit trail-following behavior using pheromones and are most active during the day.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans as they do not sting, though they can become household pests. Benefits the ecosystem through soil aeration and by preying on other small garden pests.
