Yellowjacket
Scientific Name: Vespula spp.
Order & Family: Hymenoptera: Vespidae
Size: 10 to 25 mm (0.4 to 1 inch) depending on the caste (worker vs queen).

Natural Habitat
Yellowjackets are commonly found in gardens, woodlands, and urban areas. They typically build nests underground in rodent burrows or above ground in hollow logs, wall voids, and eaves.
Diet & Feeding
Adults primarily feed on nectar and sugars for energy, while they hunt insects and spiders to provide protein for their larvae. They are also attracted to human food, especially meats and sweets.
Behavior Patterns
Yellowjackets are eusocial insects living in colonies with a single queen. They are highly territorial and protective of their nests; they tend to become more aggressive in late summer and autumn as their food sources decline.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include painful stings that can cause severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) in some individuals. Benefits include their role as natural pest control, as they hunt large numbers of garden pests like flies and caterpillars.
