Natural Habitat
Dry wood, hardwood timber, wooden furniture, and structural lumber with high starch content.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the starch within hardwoods such as oak, ash, walnut, and hickory, boring tunnels as they grow.
Behavior Patterns
They are nocturnal and attracted to light. Females lay eggs in the pores of wood, and the developing larvae can spend months or years eating wood from the inside before emerging as adults.
Risks & Benefits
A significant structural pest that can reduce solid wood to a fine, flour-like powder. They pose no direct health risk to humans but can cause severe damage to homes and antique furniture.
