Click Beetle

Natural Habitat

Found worldwide in varied environments including forests, grasslands, and agricultural fields; often found under bark, in rotting logs, or in soil.

Diet & Feeding

Adults typically feed on nectar, pollen, flowers, and occasionally soft-bodied insects. Larvae, known as wireworms, feed on roots, seeds, and decaying organic matter.

Behavior Patterns

Characterized by a unique clicking mechanism used to right themselves or escape predators. When on their back, they snap a prosternal spine into a groove on the mesosternum, launching themselves into the air. Most are nocturnal and are attracted to light.

Risks & Benefits

Adults are generally harmless to humans. However, the larval stage (wireworms) can be significant agricultural pests, damaging crops by eating roots and germinating seeds. In the ecosystem, they aid in decomposition and serve as food for birds and small mammals.
