Natural Habitat

Gardens, woodland edges, grasslands, and around buildings, where it builds large vertical orb webs. The pictured spider is positioned at the web’s hub.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous, capturing flies, moths, mosquitoes, and other flying insects in sticky silk. It immobilizes prey with venom and consumes liquefied tissues.

Behavior Patterns

Mostly nocturnal or crepuscular; many species rebuild or repair webs regularly and remain at the hub or nearby retreat. Adults mate seasonally, and females produce silk egg sacs.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to people, with bites uncommon and usually mild. They provide valuable natural pest control and are not medically significant in most regions.
