Case-bearing clothes moth larva (probable)
Tinea pellionella
- Order & Family
- Lepidoptera; Tineidae
- Size
- Larva and case typically 4–8 mm long; adult moths have a wingspan of about 9–16 mm.
Natural Habitat
Indoors, especially closets, carpets, upholstery, stored textiles, and dusty undisturbed areas. Larvae hide inside portable silk-and-fiber cases.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae consume keratin-containing materials, including wool, fur, feathers, hair, and lint. Adults generally do not feed.
Behavior Patterns
The larva carries a camouflaged case made from silk and fabric fibers, emerging to feed and retreating when disturbed. Pupation occurs within or near the case; adults are small, pale, and weak fliers.
Risks & Benefits
Larvae can damage natural-fiber clothing, rugs, and upholstery but do not bite people or transmit disease. They contribute modestly to decomposition of animal-derived fibers.
