Varied Carpet Beetle
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Coleoptera (Beetles), Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: 2 to 3 mm (approx. 0.08 to 0.12 inches) in length

Natural Habitat
Often found indoors, particularly in homes near natural fibers like wool carpets, furniture, and closets. In nature, they are found in bird nests and animal dens.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on pollen and nectar. The larvae (often called 'woolly bears') feed on natural fibers, including wool, fur, silk, feathers, dead insects, and pet dander.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are attracted to light and often found on windowsills. The destructive larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas like the underside of rugs or the back of closets. They undergo a complete metamorphosis.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: The larvae can damage carpets, clothing, and taxidermy. While they do not bite, their bristle-like hairs can cause allergic dermatitis in some humans. Benefit: In nature, they act as decomposers of dried animal matter.
