Natural Habitat

Found in wet, organic-rich environments such as drains, sewer pipes, septic tanks, and damp soil near compost.

Diet & Feeding

Scavengers that feed on the gelatinous film (biofilm) of algae, fungi, bacteria, and decomposing organic matter found in drains.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic and can survive in very low oxygen environments. They often remain submerged in slime before pupating and emerging as adult flies.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans and do not bite. They represent a nuisance in homes, and while they help break down organic sludge, their presence in large numbers can indicate plumbing issues or hygiene concerns.
