Bed bug (likely nymph or small adult)
Cimex lectularius
- Order & Family
- Hemiptera; Cimicidae
- Size
- Adults are about 4–7 mm long; nymphs range from roughly 1–6 mm. The pictured insect appears small and possibly immature.
Natural Habitat
Mattress seams, bed frames, upholstered furniture, cracks, and other sheltered indoor crevices, especially near sleeping areas.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds mainly on blood, usually from humans, by piercing skin with specialized mouthparts. It can survive for months without feeding.
Behavior Patterns
Primarily nocturnal, hiding during daylight and emerging to feed. Females lay eggs in protected crevices, and populations spread by hitchhiking in luggage, clothing, and furniture.
Risks & Benefits
Bites cause itchy, localized welts and may trigger allergic reactions; bed bugs are not established vectors of human disease. They provide little meaningful ecological benefit indoors and can cause substantial emotional and economic stress.
