Natural Habitat

Found in dark, damp environments with high humidity (75-95%) such as bathrooms, basements, attics, and kitchens. They often hide in cracks and crevices.

Diet & Feeding

Detritivores that consume matter containing polysaccharides, such as starches and dextrin in adhesives. This includes paper, book bindings, carpet, clothing, glue, sugar, hair, and dandruff.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and moves in a wiggling motion resembling a fish. They are wingless insects that molt throughout their lives and can live for several years. They are fast runners and shy away from light.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans (they do not bite or sting and are not known to transmit disease), but they are considered household pests because they can damage property like books, wallpaper, clothing, and pantry items. They can trigger allergies in some people.
