Behavior Patterns
Attracted to light and the scent of fermentation; they have a very rapid life cycle (about 8-10 days) and are capable of laying hundreds of eggs in moist organic debris.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but considered a significant nuisance pest. They can cross-contaminate food surfaces with bacteria; however, they are invaluable to science as a model organism for genetic and developmental research.
