Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding

Adults and larvae eat stored grains, flour, cereal products, decaying plant matter, and other organic debris.

Behavior Patterns

Mostly nocturnal and ground-dwelling; adults hide under cover during the day. Females lay eggs in food substrates, and larvae are the familiar mealworms used as animal feed.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to people and not venomous, though infestations can contaminate stored food. Larvae are valuable food for birds, reptiles, fish, and other animals and help recycle organic material.
